Weimaraner

It is a race of very robust German sample and great resistance. Is trained it with enough facility and finds use for diverse animal species: perdiz, pheasant, quail and even corzo, having to hunt, therefore, in lands very varied, to which one adapts with relative facility. It exists in three varieties of layer: of short and fine hair, of short and hard hair and long hair. The three have in common a good sense of smell and a great affection by the master, to which a certain distrust is added towards the strangers.
This dog descends surely from a older German Braco and, in his present aspect, already he was well-known in 1600, although it was exclusively in the perreras of the Dukes of Sajonia-Weimar, from which later it took the name. During centuries it remained like exclusive property of these Dukes, and only at the beginning of century XX it began to extend by all Germany, entering in competition with the Kurzhaar.

Particularly vivaz, the Braco de Weimar is a dog of good constitution, of quite great size (the maximum one for the males is of 70 centimeters of raised to the cross), very elegant, with compact and muscular structure. In addition to being a good dog of sample, the Weimaraner is also optimal collector and knows to perfectly follow the sign of the wounded prey. The head, in good proportion with the rest of the body, has ears of good length, high birth. The layer, in all the varieties of the hair, is gray in diverse tonalities, from the silverplated one to corzo and the gray mouse, with the head and the ears of slightly clearer color.

Raised to the cross. Males, of 59 to 70 cm.; females, of 57 to 65 cm.

Head. Lean, slightly wider in the males who in the females. Trufa dark incarnated color, grayish in the superior part. Rectilinear or slightly convex nasal cane. Superior lips moderately superposed the inferior ones. Slight central depression in the forehead. Stop as soon as pronounced. Little prominent occipital protuberance.

Eyes. Color amber. Even two-color pencils blue-amber.

Ears. Wide and relatively long, with the ends cleared with high and narrow birth, slightly turned forwards when the dog is alert.

Neck. Muscular, relatively round, but not very short.

Body. Strong chest, not very wide, but enough deep length and, fallen at least until the elbows. Long and bent, but not abarriladas ribs. Relatively short, but not saddled back.

Extremities. Muscular, relatively long. Long shoulders, angulados well.

Feet. Very compact, with bent fingers.

Tail. Cut in first or the second day of life to a third by the root.

Coat. Cut-fine, cut-hard and rough, long. Color: gray-silverplated, intermediate gray-corzo, gray-mouse or colors between these. Slightly clearer head and ears.

FEEDING. The nutritional necessities for this dog of sample are, like ration of maintenance, variables, according to the weight, from the 1,450 to 1,700 Kcal. daily. The ration must be increased until the triple of these values for the units submissive an intense physical activity, as the one of the hunting. Therefore, in this period, to avoid the ingestion of great amounts of hardly digeribles foods, it is necessary to increase lipids with respect to carbohydrates. The fats, in effect, constitute for the dog a power plant of reduced volume more.

DAILY CARES. The Weimaraner is a dog provided with a layer of short and fine hair that needs, for the cleaning, of a horsehair glove, that is to go the body mainly and, next, a smooth cloth of franela.

WITH THE VETERINARIAN. The cut of the tail must be made so that it is reduced between 4 and 4.5 cm. have described a progressive injury of probable hereditary origin in the Weimaraner, consisting of an upheaval of the spinal marrow and that tolerates, in the units of 30 to 40 days, to walk by jumps
