The coccidios are parasitic protozoos (organisms unicellular) that are multiplied in tracto intestinal of dogs and cats, single detectable in analysis of fecal material, people in charge of one feared well-known disease like ?Coccidiosis?.
Most of the coccidios in the dogs and cats they are of the Isospora species.
The infection by coccidios is specially common in young animals of deposits or day-care centers being associated to conditions of hacinamiento and high stress (refuges, hospitals, gateríos), although in of the cases not necessarily it is a sign of lack of hygiene much.
The predisponentes factors are: early age, concurrent disease, undernourishment and inmunosupresión.
The route of I infect that we see in the daily clinic, is from eggs evacuated in lees of the infected animal, these become infectious for other animals within 1 to 7 days, depending of the temperature, also the flies and other insects are transmitting mechanics (vectors) of eggs of the coccidios (ooquistes).
Signs and symptoms:
An infected animal can be symptomatic or asintomatico, this last one means that an animal infested with coccidios, can eliminate them in its excrements and not suffer the disease (the coccidiosis).
The asintomática infection happens to pronounce like disease when the number of destroyed cells surpasses the regeneramiento capacity.
The symptoms depend on the infection degree, can be slight or very severe, most common:
* diarrea (first sign, can appear blood and mucosity)
* abdominal pain (cólicos)
* dehydration
* loss of weight
* hiporexia
The severely affected animals have depositions watery sanguinolentas (similar to those of parvovirus) in addition can attend with vomits, to lose the appetite totally, to dehydrate and to die.
Diagnosis:
The veterinary diagnosis is essential, takes place examining lees by analysis of fecal material (coproparasitológico), is important to have in consideration that a negative result does not indicate that the patient is not parasitado and frees of Coccidios, because can be in a period of egg nonexpulsion reason why the negative studies must be repeated.
Treatment:
Specific medicines exist that they control to the coccidiosis: Ej. Sulfadimetoxina + Dimetridazol, azitromicina, amprolium (Corid) and by all means therapeutic of support (depending on the severity of the presented/displayed picture).
The explanation of the combined use of Sulfadimetoxina and Dimetridazol (which we recommended of first election) is because the Sulfa is specifies for the Coccidios and the Dimetridazole allows to the control and elimination of bacteria and parasites (giardias) associated (Ej. names commercial GIACOCCIDE)
The treatment requires generally of but of one week depending on or used drugs.
Prophylaxis and control:
* Suitable treatment of or the exposed puppies.
* To put water constantly clean.
* Control of insects, doves and flies (it forms mechanics of I infect).
* Strict hygiene (to retire all the fecal matter of the place).
* To disinfect plates, beds, caniles etc. Most of disinfectants they do not work reason why we recommended to submerge them in boiling water or in a solution with ammoniac to 10%, a disinfectant of veterinary use exists in the market at the moment I specify with encouraging results (a quaternary ammonium).
